Writing Prompts
Whether you use a sentence or 1 word writing prompt, sometimes we need help with Writer’s Block. But according to Seth Godin, writer’s block wasn’t invented until the 1940’s. Prior to that, there wasn’t even a word for it.
Back then, writers enjoyed their hobby. There was little anxiety or fear of not being able to write. Today – everyone is a writer. Diaries, Journals, Blog posts, Social Media – you name it, and someone is writing for a reason. Whether it’s fame or fortune, or both, fear drives us to seek encouragement to create.
Enter Writing Prompts
The definition for the verb prompt is:
- To incite to action
- To encourage or inspire
- To assist by cueing
With those Webster definition, just about any verb can be a prompt. But should it be in present or past tense?
Both promote action, but in a different way. Creative writing prompts mostly promote present tense verbs while Historical fiction can be focused on past tense. Either way, writing about a dream or a memory, prompt can lead you down a rabbit hole or in a space mission. It’s your opportunity to be inspired.
